## What Does Our Hedge Cutting Service Include?

Our hedge cutting service covers all types of domestic and boundary hedging — from formal box, privet and yew hedges to large conifer, laurel and beech boundaries. We carry out regular shape-maintaining trims, hard renovation cuts for overgrown hedges, hedge height reduction, side trimming for access, and complete hedge removal where required.

We use professional-grade petrol hedge trimmers for speed on large runs, electric trimmers for precision on formal hedges, and hand shears for tight work around windows, walls and garden features. Every cut is made cleanly to encourage dense, healthy regrowth.

**Who is it for?** Any homeowner with hedges that need regular trimming to maintain shape, size and density. Property owners with boundary hedges that need keeping under control. Anyone with hedges that have become too tall, too wide or too unruly to manage themselves.

**When is it needed?** Most hedges in Ayrshire benefit from two to three cuts per year. The first cut in late May or early June tidies up spring growth. A second cut in August or September maintains shape through autumn. Formal hedges may need a third cut in late summer for a crisp finish. Fast-growing species like leylandii and laurel may need cutting every six to eight weeks during peak growth.

**Why professional help matters:** Hedges are living structures. Cutting at the wrong time, at the wrong height, or with blunt tools causes damage that takes years to recover from. Leylandii cut back too far into old wood will not regrow. Beech trimmed after August loses its attractive autumn leaf retention. We understand the specific requirements of every common hedge species and time our cuts accordingly.

## What Happens When Hedges Are Not Maintained

Hedges that are not cut regularly lose their shape and density. They become wider and taller with each growing season, gradually encroaching on paths, driveways, neighbouring properties and windows. Once a hedge has grown significantly beyond its intended size, bringing it back is far more difficult — and in some cases, impossible — compared to regular trimming.

Overgrown hedges block light. A hedge that has grown from 6ft to 10ft can dramatically reduce natural light to your garden and your home. Neighbours' gardens are also affected, and hedge disputes are one of the most common causes of neighbour conflict. Under the High Hedges (Scotland) Act 2014, neighbours can apply to the local authority to require you to reduce a hedge that unreasonably affects their enjoyment of their property.

Neglected hedges also look untidy, reducing your property's kerb appeal. They create maintenance debt — the longer you leave them, the bigger and more expensive the job becomes. A hedge that has been left for two years may need hard pruning that leaves it looking bare for a full growing season before it recovers.

Some species, particularly leylandii and other conifers, will not regrow from old wood. If a conifer hedge is allowed to grow too wide and is then cut back to the main stems, those stems will remain bare permanently. The only solution is removal and replacement — a far more expensive outcome than regular trimming would have been.

Our Process

## How We Work

1

### Hedge Assessment

We assess the species, condition and size of your hedges, discuss your preferred shape and height, and agree the best timing for cutting based on the species and the season.

2

### Protection and Access

We protect paths, lawns and borders beneath the hedge with sheeting where needed. We set up safe access for tall hedges using appropriate platforms or ladders.

3

### Precision Cutting

Each hedge is cut to the agreed shape and height using the appropriate tool — professional trimmers for speed and consistency, hand shears for precision. We cut slightly tapered — wider at the base than the top — to allow light to reach the lower sections and maintain density from top to bottom.

4

### Shrub Pruning

Ornamental shrubs, roses and specimen plants are pruned according to species — at the correct time of year, at the correct point on the stem — to promote health, flowering and shape.

5

### Full Clean-Up

All cuttings are collected, loaded and removed from site. Paths and lawns are swept. Nothing is left for you to deal with.

Why It Matters

## The Benefits You Get

### Clean, Defined Boundaries

Neatly trimmed hedges create a well-defined, attractive boundary that immediately improves the appearance of your property.

### Dense, Healthy Growth

Regular cutting at the right time encourages dense, bushy growth. Your hedges provide better privacy, wind protection and visual screening.

### No Neighbour Disputes

Keeping boundary hedges under control prevents the complaints and legal issues that arise when hedges encroach on neighbouring properties.

### Species-Specific Knowledge

We know the right cutting times, methods and limits for every common hedge species. This protects your hedges from damage caused by incorrect trimming.

### Professional Equipment

Commercial-grade hedge trimmers produce a cleaner, more consistent finish than domestic tools. The difference is visible from the road.

### Full Waste Removal

Every cutting, branch and leaf is removed. We leave your property cleaner than we found it.

## Hedge Cutting Services in Detail

### Conifer Hedges (Leylandii, Thuja, Lawson's Cypress)

Conifers are the most common cause of neighbour disputes in Scotland. They grow fast — leylandii can add 90cm per year — and quickly become unmanageable if not trimmed regularly. We trim conifers two to three times per year to maintain size, always cutting within the green growth. Conifers do not regenerate from old brown wood, so regular trimming before they get too wide is essential. For severely overgrown conifer hedges, we can reduce height, but width reduction is limited to the extent of green growth.

### Beech and Hornbeam Hedges

Beech and hornbeam are among the most attractive hedging plants in Scotland. When trimmed in late summer (August), they retain their copper-coloured leaves through winter, providing year-round screening. These species respond well to regular trimming and can be maintained at any height from 3ft to 15ft+. Hard pruning to renovate an overgrown beech hedge is best done in late winter before bud break.

### Privet Hedges

Privet is fast-growing and requires two to three cuts per year minimum. It responds very well to hard pruning and can be renovated even when severely overgrown. Privet hedges are ideal for formal gardens as they can be trimmed to precise geometric shapes. We cut privet between May and September, avoiding trimming in winter when frost can damage fresh cuts.

### Laurel Hedges

Cherry laurel and Portuguese laurel are popular for their large, glossy leaves and fast growth. Laurel is best cut with secateurs or hand shears rather than hedge trimmers, as trimmer blades shred the large leaves, causing unsightly brown edges. For large laurel hedges, we use professional long-reach secateurs and reciprocating hedge cutters that produce a cleaner cut. Laurel responds well to hard pruning and can be cut back to bare stems if renovation is needed.

### Box Hedging

Box (Buxus) is the classic choice for formal low hedging and topiary. We trim box two to three times per year using hand shears for a precise finish. Box blight has become increasingly common — we inspect for symptoms during every visit and can advise on treatment if detected. Box is slow-growing, so maintaining it at the desired size is straightforward once established.

### Hedge Removal

Where a hedge is beyond saving, not wanted, or needs replacing, we carry out complete removal including stump grinding or root extraction. The site is left clear and ready for a new hedge, fence or other boundary treatment. We can also supply and plant replacement hedging if required.
